New Book: “BEST-Barrio Eighteenth Street, Mara Salvatrucha & Other Sureño Gangs Across America”

Andrew Eways and Gabriel Morales have a new book out on Sureño gangs.  It describes the problems of Sureño gang migration from Southern California, all across America, and even beyond U.S. borders.  The book goes into detail about the origins and expansion of 18th Street and Mara Salvatrucha to American communities large and small as well as to Central America. Also covered is Florencia 13, the Avenues, White Fence, Logan Heights, and many other Sureño gangs, as well as rival Norteños.  It explains how to read Gang Graffiti, how to help eradicate it, shows how to decipher drawings as well as gang tattoos, and other warning signs of gang activity.  It includes “The Fight Against Gangs”, what strategies seem to work and which don’t.  It is meant for Gang Cops, Patrol, Corrections, Youth Workers, and the General Public.

What do you think?  Would you buy it?  Why do you think these kinds of gangs exist?

  2. This is a book I have been waiting for. Its probable one of the most important books anyone can get there hands on. For those of you in the field of Corrections, Social Services, the public and private sector, its worth the reading. It will give you first hand knowledge of gangs. Gabe has shown me through many of his trainings that his knowledge is one of the best in the field. He works in Corrections and has first hand knowledge through meeting and assessing gang members as they funnel through the correctional system. What an intersting life Gabe and you made the best of it by documenting facts and making it available to us so we may be part of the solution. You did this at the risk of your life as a daily routine. Thank you for your hard work Gabe. I'm looking forward to reading it.

  3. Co-writing this book has been a rewarding experience. Gabe and I have both worked to address the issue of criminal gangs from different perspectives; me as a police officer, Gabe as a Classification Specialist, and both of us as advocates of intervention and prevention efforts.

Our book exposes the reader to the history of some of the most widespread, influential gangs in the United States as well as many examples of how they have negatively affected communities and innocent civilians across the country. Even though it will not likely provide an answer to the gang problem, but it will inspire others to ask more questions and to get involved. Please take the time to view my blog as well and offer your comments.
